Fictional phone calls - THERE wasn’t much in the way of evidence in this case. Not what most people would consider evidence. No photographs, eyewitnesses, DNA evidence, dirty money, odd travel arrangements and – because Geoff’s company bought him a nice salary – no need for the money so no motive.
It's all in the timing - When the CPS gave Geoff’s legal team an initial schedule of calls to and from his mobile phone, it didn’t include the call at 6.30pm – when he was first contacted about the dodgy brakes.
Can you convict on a lie - The law understands that people lie for all sorts of reasons –it is not always because that person is guilty.
That's all folks - AND that’s the sum total of the evidence against Geoff - a panicked lie and a series of unrecorded phone calls. There weren’t even any calls on the days leading up to February 27th. Nothing.
